I’m not necessarily a big birthday person (hence my belated post). My birthday, 10 August, seems to always fall on the most inopportune day. When I was growing up, without fail, my special day coincided with the first week of school. Thankfully my family always did an amazing job of separating my birthday gifts and my back-to-school supplies. So I never had to worry about getting a case of mechanical pencils and binders as my birthday surprise. Despite the difficulty of trying to gather my group of friends on one of the most hectic weeks of the whole school year, I still had loads of fun and memories gathered from birthdays.
Two odd birthdays I remember are from high school and college. One year in high school I had to spent most of the money I received on a Texas TI-83! Now let me put a disclaimer out there by no means was this my dream gift. This purchase was basically a necessity for high school students. If you don’t remember having a TI-83 you were either a math genius or stole one during math period from some “cool” kid like me. That brick of calculator took up nearly a quarter of my backpack for the better part of my high school career! And you better believe I still have that little guy floating around my apartment somewhere. I don’t think I ever really used it to its full capacity, but what I did know how to do made me feel super smart at the time!
The other odd and memorable birthday was my 21st. It was my senior year of university and I was a collegiate volleyball player. Being a senior and underage made me one of the youngest students in my whole class. So yes, I wasn’t even 21 until the year I was set to graduate! The timing of my 21st birthday couldn’t have been planned any worse since I had to worry about returning for volleyball preseason training which began on my actual birthday…yay. As one of only two seniors on the team, I was expected by my coach to outperform not only my last year’s standards but also set an example for all the incoming freshmen. Therefore going out for drinks the night of my birthday was pretty much completely out of the question. I may have missed out celebrating the night going into my birthday, but all that was quickly forgotten thanks to my friends and family who surprised me after my preseason tests with a fun night out in our town! After all that celebrating I still had to prepare for training the next day! Somehow the Heavens must have heard my silent prayers as I entered the gym because that morning I was granted a day of no sprints and no jumping!
This year I celebrated my birthday with a small group of my best friends and my fiancé. We spent the evening in downtown Denver dancing and celebrating to country music at the Cowboy Lounge. I may have tried to share some bits over Snapchat and Instagram too for those of you who couldn’t attend! However like I said earlier I’m not a very big celebratory birthday person. I try to draw as little attention to it as possible, but this birthday was so much fun! Having my closest friends who care about me and just wanted to enjoy my company was the best gift. I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday night and it was all thanks to them.
Hope all the August babies and Leos out there are having an awesome birthday month!
